Sunshine and Spring weather welcomed thousands of visitors from across the country, as well as a record breaking number from overseas, to the Shire Horse Society Spring Show at exec Peterborough on the East of England Showground last weekend. They were treated to the wonderful spectacle of over 250 Shire horses competing in the World’s largest Shire Horse Show, all in the comfort of exec Peterborough’s main hall.

Organised by the Shire Horse Society to raise much needed funds to support this magnificent breed, visitors were able to see hundreds of Shire horses expertly presented and dressed in their traditional glory over the two-days, with a range of demonstrations and classes featuring in-hand, harness and turnout exhibits.

All the showing classes were held in the fabulous main ring in the exec Peterborough exhibition hall, allowing the horses to be shown in all their glory in this spectacular environment.

The winning horses were:

Stallion: Acle Brigadier owned by B Banham of Norfolk
Mare: Pantyrhuad Heidi owned by P & W Bedford of Yorkshire
Gelding: Aclid Odin owned by Tony Bull of Cheshire
Turnout: Daniel Thwaites plc
Ridden: Chew Mill Shady Lady ridden by K Whittaker of Cheshire

As well as the horses, visitors were able to see a display of vintage tractors and farm machinery. There was frenetic activity on both days in the dog agility ring and also in the farriery competition – the largest competition between heavy horse farriers in England.

In addition to all the displays there were many trade stands – enough to keep the shopaholics happy!

Andrew Mercer, Chief Executive at the Society said, ‘The sight of these marvellous animals in the state of the art exhibition centre is a fabulous one to behold. As a bonus, this year we were blessed with fantastic weather and people were able to enjoy the show indoors and out.

Mr Mercer went on to say ‘It is vital that as a nation we continue to support this breed and the Shire Horse Spring Show is certainly a fantastic way of promoting this magnificent animal and encourage ownership amongst the younger generation to secure the breeds future existence’.
